Nanoemulsions obtained via bubble-bursting at a compound interface

چکیده
Bursting of bubbles at an air/liquid interface is a familiar occurrence relevant to foam stability, cell cultures in bioreactors and ocean–atmosphere mass transfer. In the latter case, bubble-bursting leads to the dispersal of sea-water aerosols in the surrounding air. Here we show that bubbles bursting at a compound air/oil/water-with-surfactant interface can disperse submicrometre oil droplets in water. Dispersal results from the detachment of an oil spray from the bottom of the bubble towards water during bubble collapse. We provide evidence that droplet size is selected by physicochemical interactions between oil molecules and the surfactants rather than by hydrodynamics. We demonstrate the unrecognized role that this dispersal mechanism may play in the fate of the sea surface microlayer and of pollutant spills by dispersing petroleum in the water column. Finally, our system provides an energy-e cient route, with potential upscalability, for applications in drug delivery, food production and materials science.

Nanoemulsions: formation, properties and applications.
Nanoemulsions are kinetically stable liquid-in-liquid dispersions with droplet sizes on the order of 100 nm. Their small size leads to useful properties such as high surface area per unit volume, robust stability, optically transparent appearance, and tunable rheology. Nanoemulsions are finding application in diverse areas such as drug delivery, food, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and material sy...
متن کاملIdentification the Periods of Formation and Bursting of Speculative Bubbles in Iranian Stock Market Using Quantitative Models
The purpose of this study is to investigate and identify the periods of formation and bursting of speculative bubbles in Iran's capital market by creating a state space model and two-mode switching regime (mode 1 is bubble growth and burst stage and mode 2 is the time of bubble loss) during the period from April 2011 to March 2018. The Oxmetrics 7 software is used to investigate the existence o...
متن کاملSize limits the formation of liquid jets during bubble bursting
A bubble reaching an air-liquid interface usually bursts and forms a liquid jet. Jetting is relevant to climate and health as it is a source of aerosol droplets from breaking waves. Jetting has been observed for large bubbles with radii of R≫100 μm. However, few studies have been devoted to small bubbles (R<100 μm) despite the entrainment of a large number of such bubbles in sea water. Here we ...

Significant efforts are being made to develop more practical and versatile approaches for the preconcentration and purification of complex chemical samples. Inspired by the naturally occurring enrichment of organic compounds in sea aerosols, in this study we demonstrate the potential of induced bubble bursting as an approach for the preconcentration of organic solutes in various aqueous solutio...
متن کاملAcoustic emission associated with the bursting of a gas bubble at the free surface of a non-Newtonian fluid.
We report experimental measurements of the acoustic emission associated with the bursting of a gas bubble at the free surface of a non-Newtonian fluid. On account of the viscoelastic properties of the fluid, the bubble is generally elongated. The associated frequency and duration of the acoustic signal are discussed with regard to the shape of the bubble and successfully accounted for by a simp...
